Ambleside from Wansfell slopes

Ambleside as a cycling base.

Ambleside is a great centre for walking and cycling, with access to easy, strenuous, difficult and darn right dangerous routes which are great ways to see the landscape, get excercise and have fun. Tourist Information Centres carry walks and cycle route leaflets to get you on your way. So do we.
There is a huge variety of cycling routes you can take in the Lake District and Ambleside is centrally placed and at the hub of the road network. Ambleside backpackers hostel is a marvelous accommodation base for cycle touring in the lakes with secure cycle storage, bike washing stuff, 3 really good cycle shops for repairs on cheap mid range and expensive road and mountain bikes. Ghylside Cycles and Bike Treks have been established some years and the 'Push Bike Shop@ is newly opened serving the upper end of the money market.
One thing is certain, for general scenic touring there is no better place to bike.

For the super fit cyclist

The Fred Whitton Challenge is the preserve of the dedicated super fit cyclist, however you can tackle this most demanding cycle route and be officially time recognized by entering under the Fred Whitton Challence 'Four seasons banner.
You get time cards and instruction on how to clock in to specific time checks so you, or you and your friends can have your own recognized attempt at this endurance race of 112 miles and all the Lakes passes in your own time.

Other Great Cycle Trials.

There are other great road race and cycle events in the Lake District throughout the year. However you do not need to be a super fit cyclist to enjoy the challenge of cycling in Cumbria.
It is probably fair to say that Cycling in the Lake District or Cumbria is more physically demanding than cycling in Cambridge or the Fen's. However there are some flattish rides that even the unfit can tackle without too much trepidation. Even on these 'flat' routes some couch potatoes will have to get off and push their bike though I am afraid!
